CHAPTER 15

The Seven Last Plagues

This is a very short chapter that prepares for the release of the seven last plagues.  The seven last plagues are the third woe, and they are also part of the seventh trump.  This chapter could be thought of as part of the seventh trump even if the seven vials containing the seven last plagues are not poured out upon the Earth until chapter 16.  The seventh trump began to sound in chapter 11.  Chapters 12, 13 and 14 are inset chapters picturing the struggle between the forces of the evil one and those loyal to God.   Finally, all those who overcame Satan in this world stand before the throne of God and sing the song of Moses, as well as the song of the Lamb.

Rev. 15:1  And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.
John mentioned a sign in heaven here.  This sign is like those signs in chapter 12.  It undoubtedly is a constellation that was part of the ancient story written in the sky which was passed on orally from generation to generation.  In any case, John says that these seven angels are each holding a vessel containing something awful     a really bad wine as it were.  It is so bad that it is called the wrath of God and the inhabitants of the Earth must drink it.  The word wrath here is the Greek word thumos (Strong's No. 2372) and means wrath, anger, or passion, but its source is the word thuo (Strong's No. 2380) which means to kill, or sacrifice.  These things do not bode well for the people who inhabit the Earth.
Rev. 15:2  And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.
Delete and over his mark Here are those who throughout time have successfully resisted the beast, and Antichrist, including his image of the beast.  They are the saints of God standing on the glassy sea which is before the throne of God in Heaven.  These actually have the right to stand before God's throne and see Him up close and personal as we say.
Rev. 15:3  And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.
According to The Companion Bible, the texts read nations instead of saints.  God is King over all people everywhere, not just the saints.  These singing are of course those in chapter 14, the elect and others who have overcome, and they are singing two songs.  The song of Moses is mentioned in the first clause, and then the words of song of the Lamb begin starting in the second clause.  The song of Moses is found in Deuteronomy 32.  Go to it now and study it, for it explains what has happened from the beginning to the end.  See if you can pick out the tares and what their role is in the big picture.  See if you can differentiate our Rock from their rock.
Rev. 15:4  Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.
Omit theeThis verse is a continuation of the Song of the Lamb, and we shall see the fulfillment of the words later in chapters 19-22.  After all is said and done the real truth will become evident to everyone and the majority of all those who have ever lived will perceive God as He really is.  They shall worship Him and revere Him in spirit and in truth.
Rev. 15:5  And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:
Omit behold This opening of the Temple in Heaven is the same as previously described in the last verse of chapter 11.
Rev. 15:6  And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles.
The word plagues here is not a disease like we commonly think of when the word plague is used.  It is the Greek word plege (Strong's No. 4127) and means a stroke (from a sword or rod), and by implication, a wound.  It has its roots in plesso (Strong's No. 4141) which means to pound, flatten, smite, to inflict with calamity.  This doesn't look good for the inhabitants of the Earth.
Rev. 15:7  And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.
The word beasts here should be rendered living creatures which are part of God's throne.  These vials are actually the bowls containing the strong wine.  Remember that the wrath of God is likened to strong wine in chapter 14.  Wine is also used as a symbol for blood.
Rev. 15:8  And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
The Most Holy place, or Holy of Holies, where the mercy seat is located is inaccessible for a time.  God will not hear the cries and the prayers from those below during this time.  Again, this is not good news for those who dwell on Earth.

God bless with understanding of His word.
