CHAPTER 5

The Generations Of Adam

 From Seth To Noah

Some things need to be said about the people in the Bible
before continuing.   It is important to understand  that those mentioned here in Adam's geneology are only those that are also in the lineage of Jesus Christ.  He is the central thread throughout the entire Bible, and it is because of Him that it was written.  Adam and Eve and all of those mentioned in these lineages in Genesis, and in the whole Bible for that matter, had other children and grandchildren, and great grandchildren and so forth, that are not mentioned at all.

In addition, there were many other species of humans created and placed upon the Earth during the sixth day of  creation.  Adam and Eve were created on a theoretical eight day after He had rested on the seventh day.  All those descended from Adam and Eve probably number around 2.5 billion souls today.  That is only a guesstimate, because nobody knows for sure.  Those descended from the people created on the sixth day are the other 3.5 billion or so living on the planet today.

The following geneology is a listing of some pretty special people who were the early ancestors of the Messiah.  Keep that in mind.

Gen. 5:1  This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

Gen. 5:2  Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

Gen. 5:3  And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

Gen. 5:4  And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

This last clause of this verse is a good example of what was meant in the introduction above.  Adam begat other sons and daughters besides Seth, but they were not in the lineage of Messiah.  You will notice that a similar statement is made concerning each of the patriarchs listed in this chapter.

Gen. 5:5  And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

There is something important to notice in this verse.  Peter gave us a standard about time in the Bible when he told us that a thousand years was as a day to God.

2 Peter 3:8  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

That means that it took Him 6,000 years to re-create the Earth again in the first chapter of Genesis, not six literal days.  Using that rule (1 God day = 1,000 man years), it brings to mind that God did not lie to Adam about eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  Remember?  He told Adam that in the day that he ate thereof he would surely die.  Well, Adam and Eve let Lucifer convince them that God was lying to them, and as a result they didn't quite make it through one of God's days.  He died at age 930 which is 70 years short of that magical 1,000 years, and according to lore Eve preceded him in death.

Gen. 5:6  And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:

Gen. 5:7  And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:8  And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

Gen. 5:9  And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:

Gen. 5:10  And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:11  And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

Gen. 5:12  And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel:

Gen. 5:13  And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:14  And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

Gen. 5:15  And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared:

Gen. 5:16  And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:17  And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.

Gen. 5:18  And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:

Gen. 5:19  And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

According to The Companion Bible, it was during Jared's time that the angels came and lived among the Adamic people.  This was approximately 500 years after Adam and Eve were created.   I have to wonder if God didn't send angels to help and teach mankind all over the world.  There are too many inexplicable things that exist today on Earth that are from ancient times, and in most cases it seems unlikely that men could have made them on their own.  So, what if God sent many angels to mankind for a time and only some of them decided to do things contrary to God's wishes?  The disobedient ones were then called "fallen angels".  That hypothesis seems plausible to me.  Think about it.

Gen. 5:21  And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:

Gen. 5:22  And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:23  And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

Gen. 5:24  And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Enoch was very special.  The fact that he walked with God certainly implies that he lived his life in such a way that he pleased God, and he may have actually known God face-to-face.  He fought and preached against the evil practices that men and the fallen angels were doing.  Especially the part where the angels and Adamic females were crossbreeding.

Nobody really knows to a certainty what happened to Enoch after God "took him", but some of the ancient writings contained in the pseudepigrapha say that he was taken to Heaven, or to the Garden of Eden.  What if God took him and his family away from the evil and lifted them up into the Garden so that they would be isolated from the evil, and from the crossbreeding and polluted genes?  Remember that Enoch is in the lineage of Messiah, and that he was removed from among men at an early age for that time.  Would Enoch want to leave his family in such a mess, and such an evil time?  I think not, and I believe that God loved him enough to spare his family also by removing all of them from the danger.  His son Methuselah was next in the lineage of Messiah.

Gen. 5:25  And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech:

Gen. 5:26  And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:27  And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.
Gen. 5:28  And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:

Gen. 5:29  And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

Gen. 5:30  And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

Gen. 5:31  And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

According to some, Lamech did not die in the flood but died just before it occurred.

Gen. 5:32  And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The flood that came during Noah's day is next in chapter 6.  Don't miss it.

God bless with understanding of His word.
